Mountain Winds Farm is nestled in the western hills of Berne, NY in the Heldeberg Hilltowns. The farm’s primary product is maple syrup.  Randy, a Master Forest Owner trained at Cornell University, started his maple syrup operation in 2005 with 50 pails, and has been growing the operation slowly and sustainably ever since.  Today, the farm has 50,000 feet of pipeline and 1,300 taps with the capacity to produce 500 gallons of syrup each Spring.

The Facts about health benefits of maple syrup include a healthy heart and a healthier immune system. Lets talk about the importance of zinc and manganese in the body. A lack of these minerals could easily lead to a reduction in the number of white blood cells, which affects the response of the immune system. Supplementing these minerals is the only way known to restore their levels to the proper state. Maple Syrup is a good source of both zinc and magnesium, which play a key role in strengthening the immune system.

As for the Heart Healthy benefit, our heart is one of the body’s organs that is susceptible to different kinds of diseases such as stroke, atherosclerosis, and other cardiovascular conditions. The presence of zinc in the body is one of the best ways that has been proven to protect the heart against such diseases. Maple syrup contains zinc and its consumption may protect and prevent against various cardiovascular disorders. Zinc also enhances the performance of the endothelial cells by protecting them against damage due to the existence of excess cholesterol, together with other oxidized lipids.

The sweet on syrup is this…there are several natural sweeteners that are preferred for use instead of the chemically prepared sugar that is common in most homes. There are those who prefer using honey instead of any other natural products of the same type. However, maple syrup is considered to be a better option given the low calorie count, as compared to honey. Due to its flavor and sweetness syrup adds flavor to sausages, ice cream, different types of fritters, and fresh fruit,  it can be used as a sweetener in baked beans, cakes, breads, and granola.
