Garage Style

With design moving toward Urban Industrial style, we are looking at clean living using more glass in our homes. Murphy Overhead Doors believes that unique homes deserve unique doors! Great homes come with great views, right? I’m going to show you some really beautiful rooms with a view…Imagine sitting in your family room, in your favorite chair or lounging on the sofa and being able to open part of your wall and let the fresh air in while enjoying your view! Glass Garage doors have been used in residential design more and more.

Commercial spaces have long enjoyed the idea of retractable walls, and adding additional dining and entertaining space when the weather permits. I’m sure you’ve all sat outside a restaurant like this and enjoyed the open-air concept on a nice day or evening.

But residential use of glass garage doors has created spaces where families can gather, where everyone feels welcome and has the opportunity to enjoy the landscape and surroundings.  Murphy Overhead Doors can help you create an extraordinary space that will bring your family and friends together! This design is not exclusively reserved for only the most spectacular locations, your back yard or deck can now be your entertaining oasis.

Regardless of your location, if you’re looking for a great view from your home, stop at booth 105 at The 38th Annual Home Expo, 55 Eagle St. Albany NY February 9-11th, 2018 and talk with Cindy Murphy and lets think outside the box…

Combining Cabinet Finishes, Inspired Kitchen Design

As we lean closer to closing out 2017 and look forward to welcoming 2018, the cliche’ that a house is never finished comes to mind. The trick is to find a way to put it all together so it feels complete. Curtis Lumber is ready to help with your Kitchen Renovation with some great ideas for the New Year!

Painted Cabinetry

While open floor plans are still working in most new builds, I’ve definitely witnessed the coming and going of many trends and period styles from English Country to Midcentury Modern. But I feel we’re post trend now. I think current design allows us the freedom to incorporate history in an unfussy contemporary way. When choosing kitchen cabinets, the easiest way to accomplish this is to mix finishes. Choose a lighter color for the perimeter cabinets and another darker color for your center island. Your eye is naturally drawn to the darker cabinet finish, while the lighter shade cabinets against the walls will make the room appear larger.

Always in-style are painted white cabinets, they have dominated kitchen design for easily the last 5 to 10 years.  Many homeowners considered it to be an easy choice.  White kitchen cabinets have a certain timeless quality and always brighten up the space. As a neutral color, white cabinets also played equally well with cooler walls. And while we will never see painted white cabinets go out of style, a couple of new color trends have started to pick up steam in 2017.

First, we have started to see a slight shift away from white, and moving toward gray.  Gray shares many of the properties that people love about white, but in a slightly more subdued tone.  While lighter shades of gray will never brighten up kitchen in the same way that white cabinets do, many come close, like Merillat Classic LaBelle in Maple Shale.  As a naturally neutral color, gray will also look good alongside warm or cool accent colors.

In the past few years we’ve seen former warehouse carts being cleanup and re-purposed as coffee tables across suburbia.  Just like other rooms of the home, more and more elements of both traditional and industrial design will enter the home kitchens space.  A coming together of the best of both worlds!  We’re already seeing this trend of traditional shaker cabinetry, being topped with concrete counters, combined with a farm sinks, and topped off with a tall, goose-neck faucet that would be at home in any kitchen…Elements like brick along with wrought iron stools help accomplish this industrial look, while the Merillat cabinetry: Sutton Cliffs in Hickory gives this kitchen elements of traditional style.

Curtis Lumber will be located on the lower level at booth 104 at our new location, Albany Capital Center. Visit Curtis Lumber and to talk with a kitchen and bath designer about how to create a unique space in your home! What styles have you seen start to emerge this year, or which do you think will start to really take off in 2018?  Tell us in the comments!

Styling Your Room

Good design can make any room look great, but for the average homeowner picking out the right furniture pieces, fabrics, and rugs for your living space can be a daunting task.  I’d like to share a few thoughts to help you decorate your home. Begin with establishing your style along with correct balance, proportion and scale of furnishings and decor. When it comes to decorating inspiration, a photo is definitely worth a thousand words.

The hardest part for many of us is ‘styling’ your room. We think of ‘styling’ as a way to arrange furnishings and  display the decorative objects that you’ve collected and love. It’s that final touch that takes your furniture pieces from simply functional to fabulous.

  1. Neutrals For Large Pieces – The sofa and arm chairs are likely to be your biggest investment pieces in a room, get them in neutral colors to give yourself the most flexibility. Anchor the main pieces of furniture in the space to define the area; if your space is large, a great cost effective tip for carpet is to use an inexpensive large sisal rug to cover most of the area.
  2.  Color –  is an obvious strategy when styling, and as a general rule, I recommend editing down your colors to three or four. If you want to add a punch of color pick 2 smaller accent chairs in a vibrant shade or print, which gives you more flexibility than a bright sofa . Pull accent colors from the rugs, window treatments, or art in your room.
  3. Shapes – Thoughtful space planning means setting up enough side tables and coffee tables for the seating you have, so that there is a place for guests to set a glass down but it’s important to have a mixture of shapes. If you have a very angular console table, mix in some round shapes, like lamps, sculpture, or art. Most of the seating furniture is angular, the side and coffee tables in a round shape are a nice counterpoint.  Don’t match the tables either – it’s much more interesting visually to mix and match different materials and shapes.
  4. Balance with Accessories –  One of the most important strategies when you’re styling any piece is to vary your heights. This helps your eye move around which creates a more interesting arrangement. If you have a tall lamp, use something shorter, like a stack of books for balance. Mix lots of different finishes and textures across the furniture piece you’re styling. If you have glossy, ceramic lamps, add something with a chippy paint finish or a raw wood. You don’t want everything on your table to be either shiny/polished/glossy OR patina/roughness/grain. You want some of both.
  5. Negative Space – The power of nothing. No matter what you’re styling, leave some negative space. Group items together (maybe a set of musical instruments on a short stack of books) and leave some areas of your table empty. This applies to art on the wall, blank space or a wall without anything is like a comma or a full stop in a sentence. The opportunity to just stop and enjoy the moment! As a result your room will feel more balanced.

I hope I inspired you! Thank you for letting me share some of my tips with you today, and as always…

Dining rooms are not only a place for dining but a space for gathering and nightly conversations. It is now the heart of the house (as the kitchen is the HUB!) They’re where we host holiday gatherings, have rambling long convos with our friends and family, and where we throw impromptu dinner parties. They’re the setting for some of our favorite family memories. Hmmm… I can smell the Holiday Turkey cooking and see it on the table!

Super Bowl LI

I wanted to do a quick little post with some great ideas I found online for decorating your Super Bowl football party! Okay, admittedly, if you’re not already Houston-bound (because there’s this really huge sports event happening there this weekend) or setting up the solo cups and crock pot full of Velveeta and Rotel, at this point you’re going to have to work with what you have when it comes to creating the perfect media room for watching Super Bowl 51 today. Loving all of these ideas for things you can do at your Super Bowl party this weekend!  They are super creative and the food looks so yummy.  They’ve definitely given me some great inspiration.  Who will you be cheering for this weekend??!!

Garden Design… Where Do You Begin?

While choosing your dream garden design, its crucial to keep in mind the character, style and personality of your home. Versatility is the key to creating a garden where you and your family will spend many memorable hours together. Pulling the elements that are unique and eye-catching is what Jerry Parmenter owner of Elemental Landscapes Inc. achieves with his landscape designs.

Beyond Wolf and Viking …The winner is BlueStar

Renovating your kitchen? Culinary functionality of kitchen appliances combined with magnificent design aesthetics are key elements in creating your dream kitchen. But taking the plunge on choosing a dream luxury stove can be more overwhelming than buying a new car.

Pro appliances are pricier but tend to be more durable and powerful, and they are designed BEAUTIFULLY. For serious cooks, heavy entertainers and large families they are a good choice.

Appliance Trends 2017 and Beyond..

I always get asked by those who are thinking about updating or renovating their kitchen, “what are the latest trends?” “What do I need to include in my project so that my project will last and be current for many years to come?” While most people don’t want to be too trendy in an area as expensive and as permanent as a kitchen, everyone does want to have the latest and greatest appliances that will keep their kitchen looking fresh and up to date for many years to come. At Adirondack Appliance they have been selling appliances since 1929. Technology, innovation, design and performance are all key factors for them when selecting their brands and they are careful to choose products tailored to the needs of their customers.

My recommendation for 2017…

Completely Custom…Beautifully Done Design

In today’s world of cookie-cutter design and ticky-tacky construction, “custom-built” most often means getting to pick standard cabinet pieces and colors that someone puts together to fit standard room spaces. Homeowners who want to give their existing kitchens a makeover often replace the old cabinets with new ones. However, for homeowners who truly want to give their kitchens a unique and elegant touch, custom cabinets are the right choice. John Lis, owner of Normanskill Custom Cabinet Co., has been handcrafting custom pieces for over 30 years in residential and commercial applications.
